In a world increasingly focused on sustainability and smart mobility, LeafyBus is redefining intercity travel with its all-electric fleet. Founded by seasoned bus operators with over 14 years of experience, LeafyBus is the product of a vision to standardize and modernize India’s intercity bus segment. Leveraging a deep understanding of traditional transportation and digital platforms, the founders—who also led ventures like Yellowpedal and Yotravelbook—aim to deliver a seamless, eco-friendly, and tech-enabled travel experience.

With sustainability at its core, LeafyBus offers a compelling alternative to conventional diesel buses. Each vehicle features rapid 360 kW charging (under 50 minutes), enabling up to 900 km of daily range. Their partnership with JBM Electric Vehicles helped co-develop the “Galaxy” coach bus with an upgraded 402 kWh battery and 49-seat configuration, ensuring comfort and capacity for long-distance routes. Safety is paramount, with features like CCTV, real-time tracking, ADAS, and Driver Monitoring Systems onboard.

Launching its first route between Delhi and Dehradun—powered by India’s first 360 kW fast-charging station—LeafyBus demonstrated both capability and commitment. The company also plans to scale its operations, adding 100 new buses across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab, with a five-year goal of deploying 1,000 electric buses nationwide.

With an intuitive app, onboard “Bus Buddy” assistance, and a strong focus on passenger comfort and climate goals, LeafyBus is not just a travel service—it’s a bold step toward a greener, smarter transportation future.

In a recent interview, Rashmi interacted with Rohan Dewan, Co-Founder & CEO, Leafybus in which she discussed Electric Intercity Buses, Sustainable Mobility, EV Fleet Expansion, Fast Charging Infrastructure and Smart Bus Technology etc.

What inspired the creation of LeafyBus as an all-electric intercity service?

As a bus operator with 14 years of experience, I have witnessed the evolution from passengers booking tickets over the counter to utilizing online platforms such as Redbus, MakemyTrip, and Paytm. Throughout this journey, I was driven by a strong vision to standardize intercity bus transportation. With the emergence of electric vehicles becoming a part of passenger transit, I recognized that sustainable mobility would shape the future of public transportation. Guided by this belief, my experienced team and I embarked on our journey to advance e-mobility within the bus segment.

Can you tell us more about the founder’s background in mobility solutions?

As I mentioned, I have been managing my father’s business of bus transportation in North India for the past 14 years, and I also co-founded a bus aggregation company called Yellowpedal. Animesh, my co- founder has started his journey in 2017 by launching the bus search engine yotravelbook.com and tried to digitize 95% of virgin bus inventory in India. And also founded ytbsure.com in which he was standardising the bus industry by providing standard services to bus operators like trained host, Goodies bag, Onboard wifi and announcement system. And then back in 2019 he merged with yellowpedal.

Why did you choose to partner with JBM for your electric bus fleet?

LeafyBus chose JBM buses for their reliable EV technology, strong nationwide service network, and commitment to safety and passenger comfort—perfectly aligning with our vision for premium, sustainable intercity travel. Also, we were part of development of this particular coach bus called Galaxy, increasing the battery capacity to 402kWh & increasing seating capacity to 49 seats in a 12.4m bus.

What makes the LeafyBus electric fleet suitable for long-distance intercity travel?

LeafyBus revolutionizes intercity travel with electric buses featuring rapid 360 kW fast-charging (under 50 minutes) for up to 900 km daily. Safety is ensured with CCTV, real-time tracking, DMS, and ADAS. Partnerships with JBM Electric Vehicles and AMU financing have added 200 buses to their fleet. Passengers enjoy air-conditioned comfort, reliability, and punctuality. A benchmark in sustainable transit!

How does LeafyBus contribute to reducing carbon emissions and supporting India’s climate goals?

LeafyBus reduces carbon emissions by operating electric buses, cutting reliance on fossil fuels and supporting India’s climate goals like achieving net-zero by 2070 and reducing carbon intensity by 45% by 2030. Their sustainable transport solutions promote cleaner energy and combat urban pollution.

What safety and comfort features can passengers expect onboard?

LeafyBus ensures passenger safety with features like CCTV surveillance, real-time tracking, Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS), and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). For comfort, the buses offer air-conditioned travel, clean interiors, and a hassle-free experience, prioritizing punctuality and reliability.

How does the Bus Buddy improve the passenger experience?

The “Bus Buddy” elevates the travel experience by offering personalized assistance. Passengers receive real-time updates on bus location, arrival times, and delays, keeping them informed. It also supports boarding, disembarking, and luggage handling, ensuring a hassle-free and comfortable journey for everyone onboard.

Why did you choose Delhi to Dehradun for your first route?

LeafyBus chose the Delhi–Dehradun route for its first operation due to its high demand for intercity travel and the opportunity to showcase the efficiency of their electric buses on long-distance routes. The route also allowed them to leverage India’s first 360 kW fast-charging infrastructure, enabling buses to cover 900 km daily.

What are your plans for expansion into other regions like UP and Punjab?

For expansion, LeafyBus plans to introduce 100 premium electric buses across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab within the next year. They aim to further expand into Eastern and Southern India in the future, supported by partnerships with JBM Electric Vehicles and advanced tech solutions

What’s your vision for scaling to 1,000 electric buses in five years?

LeafyBus envisions scaling to 1,000 electric buses within five years by leveraging strategic partnerships, advanced charging infrastructure, and innovative technology solutions. Their focus will be on expanding operations across key regions, enhancing fleet efficiency, and maintaining passenger comfort and safety standards. This ambitious plan aligns with their commitment to sustainable and reliable intercity travel.
