The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance has taken a decisive step in advancing electric mobility, reaffirming its long-term commitment to innovation and sustainable manufacturing. The Alliance Operating Board, comprising the CEOs of Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi Motors, recently visited the Ampere Douai Plant in France, underscoring its role as the cornerstone of their joint EV strategy.
The Ampere Douai facility has undergone a €550 million transformation, making it one of the most advanced electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plants in Europe. Since May 2023, the plant has been fully dedicated to EV production. Output has grown sharply, from approximately 50,729 units in 2023 to 89,527 units in 2024, reflecting rising demand and improved operational capacity.
Currently, the plant produces and supports six EV models across four Alliance brands — Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi Motors, and Alpine. These include the Renault Megane E-Tech, Scenic E-Tech, the highly anticipated Renault 5 (R5) E-Tech, the Alpine A290, the next-generation Nissan Micra EV, and the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross EV. Both the Micra EV and Eclipse Cross EV are scheduled to hit markets in late 2025, with the latter marking Mitsubishi’s first fully electric SUV in Europe.
To support this expanded lineup, the facility now operates with flexible modular platforms — AmpR Small and AmpR Medium — which enable the production of multiple models while maintaining each brand’s distinct identity. The addition of a battery assembly workshop further enhances efficiency, ensuring faster integration and adaptability to shifting demand.
The Alliance emphasised that the Douai plant is not just a production hub but a strategic innovation centre designed to optimise cost efficiencies, scale production, and reinforce Europe’s EV leadership. By consolidating resources while preserving brand differentiation, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi partnership aims to deliver accessible, high-performance EVs tailored to European consumers.
The move comes at a critical time as automakers worldwide intensify their shift toward electrification. With a growing product portfolio and a future-ready manufacturing ecosystem, the Alliance is positioning itself to capture a larger share of the European EV market while aligning with global sustainability goals.
