In a statement, the two firms announced their first joint venture on environmentally friendly automobiles: Suzuki Motor’s Indian division will provide Toyota Motor with its first-ever electric vehicle.
The EV will be produced by Maruti Suzuki, which is primarily owned by Suzuki Motor, at its facility in the Gujarat state of western India starting in the spring of 2025. According to the statement, Suzuki, Toyota, and Daihatsu Motor collaborated to build the EV. In the past, Suzuki and Toyota have worked together to build cars that run on gasoline, but not electric ones.
The largest automobile manufacturer in India by market share, Maruti Suzuki, sells hybrid cars made by Toyota’s Indian division but no EVs in India or abroad. The sport utility vehicle, or EV, will be powered by a 60 kWh battery pack. It has not revealed its range.
According to a Toyota representative, the world’s largest automaker plans to introduce ten battery-powered cars by 2026, including the new model. The Gujarat factory is the only location where the EV will be produced.
According to Toyota, during the first nine months of the year, it sold slightly over 108,000 battery-powered electric cars worldwide, making up 1.5% of its total sales during that time, including sales under its luxury Lexus brand.
With a capacity of 250,000 units annually, Maruti Suzuki intends to establish a fourth production line specifically for EVs at the Gujarat facility.
It had previously stated that it intended to deliver the EV to markets throughout the world, including those in Europe and its parent company Japan.
