In a major advancement for electric mobility, Toyota Motor Corporation has partnered with Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. to mass-produce cathode materials for all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs)—a next-generation technology poised to transform the performance, range, and efficiency of electric vehicles (EVs).

This collaboration represents a key milestone in Toyota’s “Beyond Zero” vision, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality while creating positive environmental value through cutting-edge sustainable technologies. The move aligns with the company’s commitment to innovation, safety, and performance in its next-generation battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

All-Solid-State Batteries: The Future of EV Powertrains

All-solid-state batteries use a solid electrolyte instead of conventional liquid electrolytes, offering higher energy density, faster charging times, and longer lifespans than traditional lithium-ion batteries. Toyota plans to integrate these advanced batteries into its BEVs, with commercial deployment expected by 2027–2028.

Since 2021, Toyota and Sumitomo Metal Mining have been jointly researching solutions to overcome technical challenges, including cathode degradation during repeated charge-discharge cycles. Leveraging Sumitomo’s proprietary powder synthesis technology, the partnership has successfully developed highly durable cathode materials optimized for all-solid-state battery applications.

With over 20 years of experience producing cathode materials for EVs, Sumitomo Metal Mining will now scale the newly developed material for mass production, supporting Toyota’s next generation of battery innovation.

Advancing Carbon Neutrality and Sustainable Mobility

Both companies will continue efforts to enhance the performance, safety, and cost-efficiency of cathode materials, paving the way for the world’s first practical application of all-solid-state batteries in commercial BEVs.

The collaboration is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the areas of affordable clean energy, industry innovation, and global partnerships, reinforcing Toyota’s dedication to a carbon-neutral society.

      Toyota’s “Beyond Zero” Philosophy

Toyota’s Beyond Zero initiative aims not only to reduce environmental impact but also to create positive value through technologies that enhance mobility and quality of life. The program highlights the importance of innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity, reflecting Toyota’s evolution from a traditional automaker to a mobility company focused on freedom of movement for all.

As global competition in next-generation EV battery technology intensifies, the Toyota–Sumitomo Metal Mining partnership positions Japan at the forefront of the solid-state battery revolution, promising significant advancements in range, efficiency, and durability for future electric vehicles.
