Suzuki unveiled the costs of its first electric vehicle, which is a sibling of the future Toyota Urban Cruiser. In a market that is getting more and more congested, the e-Vitarra will go on sale next month. Can it compete with other well-known electric SUVs, such as the Kia EV3?
Suzuki and Toyota reveal the costs of their first electric vehicle.
Suzuki this week revealed the costs of the e-Vitara, its first electric vehicle that will also be a twin to Toyota’s forthcoming electric SUV, ahead of sales, which are scheduled to start next month.
The e-Vitara will start at £29,999 ($40,500), and the flagship “Ultra ALLGRIP-e 4WD” trim will cost up to £37,799 ($51,000).
The WLTP range of Suzuki’s first EV is 346 km (215 miles) with a 49 kWh battery and 428 km (266 miles) with a 61 kWh battery.
Customers have the option of single (2WD) or dual-motor (4WD) models in the “Motion” or “Ultra” grades. Suzuki is one of the few automakers to offer an electric SUV with 4×4 and created the revolutionary four-wheel drive (4WD) ALLGRIP-e technology especially for the e-Vitara.
The eAxle and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries are housed on a new, specialised “HEARTECT-e” EV platform that the e-Vitara is mounted on.
Toyota will employ Suzuki’s electric drivetrain for its next electric SUV, the Urban Cruiser (white pictured below), as part of a growing partnership. In the next months, Toyota will introduce the Urban Cruiser, which is effectively an e-Vitara with a new name.
The dimensions of the e-Vitara are 4,275 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, 1,635 mm in height, and 2,700 mm in wheelbase. Kia’s new EV3 is roughly the same size, measuring 4,300 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width, 1,560 mm in height, and 2,680 mm in wheelbase.
The Kia EV3 was the top-selling retail EV and the fourth-best-selling electric vehicle (including commercial EVs) in the United Kingdom during the first quarter.
The EV3 starts at £33,005 ($42,500) in the UK. It’s also available with two battery options: 58.3 kWh or 81.48 kWh. The former is good for a WLTP range of 430 km (270 miles), while the latter provides a range of 599 km (375 miles), respectively
