Joining an elite group of international carriers and service providers, SriLankan Cargo, the air freight division of SriLankan Airlines, is the first airline cargo division in South Asia to receive the prestigious CEIV Lithium Batteries Certification (Center of Excellence for Independent Validators – Lithium Batteries) from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The certification, which was granted after a thorough and rigorous audit, is evidence of SriLankan Cargo’s operational excellence in managing shipments of delicate lithium- and sodium-ion batteries as well as other types of cargo.
“This certification marks a significant milestone for SriLankan Cargo, highlighting our ability to safely handle lithium- and sodium-ion battery shipments, as well as battery-powered equipment,” said Chaminda Perera, Head of Cargo at Sri Lankan Airlines, in response to the accomplishment. Additionally, it eliminates operational obstacles in the air transportation of these goods, enabling us to take advantage of the expanding e-commerce market and open up new revenue streams.
IATA’s Global Head of Cargo, Brendan Sullivan, said, “As lithium battery exports rise globally, it is more crucial than ever to ensure their safe and effective transportation. To enhance industry standards, encourage best practices, and guarantee regulatory compliance across the supply chain, IATA developed the CEIV Lithium Batteries program. We commend SriLankan Cargo for becoming certified as a CEIV Lithium Battery. This accomplishment demonstrates SriLankan Cargo’s dedication to providing top-notch lithium battery transportation, boosting client confidence in their offerings.
Each aspect of the air freight lifecycle was examined in the audit for certification, including SriLankan Cargo’s infrastructure and equipment, personnel, training procedures, documentation, quality and safety management systems, and customer management and operations. The results showed that SriLankan Cargo is in excellent shape to handle and transport lithium- and sodium-ion batteries in a safe and secure manner.
With the assurance of effective and compliant handling of lithium- and sodium-ion battery shipments, the certification strengthens SriLankan Cargo’s reputation with shippers and logistics partners. Additionally, it puts SriLankan Cargo in a more competitive position within the global supply chain for these batteries and battery-powered products, which is based on strict standards, industry best practices, and stakeholder confidence. These batteries are frequently used to power a variety of gadgets, including toys, travel equipment, remote controls, cell phones, and power tools.
It is anticipated that the accomplishment will also benefit Sri Lanka’s import and export industries, allowing SriLankan Cargo to increase income and productivity through the enhanced worker knowledge and cooperation brought about by the certification.
