Bengaluru-based electric scooter manufacturer Simple Energy has announced a major technological milestone with the commercial launch of India’s first heavy rare earth-free motors for electric vehicles (EVs). The move positions the company to re-enter the competitive EV market while addressing supply chain vulnerabilities caused by global rare earth restrictions.
The company’s newly developed motor architecture eliminates the need for traditional heavy rare earth magnets by using optimised alternative compounds. This innovation maintains high performance and torque while reducing reliance on imported materials. The motors are currently being produced at Simple Energy’s 200,000 sq. ft. facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, ensuring scalable manufacturing capabilities.
Suhas Rajkumar, CEO and co-founder of Simple Energy, emphasised the strategic importance of the development: “This technology proves that high performance can be achieved without compromising sustainability or strategic independence. It is a step toward building a self-reliant EV ecosystem in India.”
In addition to the technological breakthrough, Simple Energy is rapidly expanding its retail and service network. The company currently operates 42 stores across India and aims to scale this number to 100 by December 2025, enhancing accessibility for customers and strengthening brand presence nationwide.
The development comes at a crucial time for India’s EV market, which has seen over 1 million EV units sold in FY25 and continues to grow rapidly amid rising consumer adoption and supportive government policies. By introducing rare earth-free EV motors, Simple Energy not only mitigates supply chain risks but also contributes to sustainable mobility solutions aligned with India’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.
The company is now poised for a strategic market comeback, leveraging its technological innovation, expanding retail footprint, and focus on sustainability to compete effectively in India’s fast-growing electric two-wheeler segment.
