Scania has officially launched Scania Industrial Batteries, a new division dedicated to the production and sale of battery systems for off-road and industrial applications. This move follows Scania’s acquisition of Northvolt Systems Industrial, a subsidiary specializing in battery systems for heavy industry and off-highway applications.
Strategic Acquisition and Expansion
In early 2025, Northvolt announced the spin-off and sale of its industrial division, which was one of its few profitable business areas. Scania, an investor and customer of Northvolt, acquired the division, including a battery module production facility near Gdansk, a research and development center in Tomteboda near Stockholm, and a team of approximately 260 employees.
The acquisition enables Scania to integrate the acquired company’s capabilities into its existing operations, enhancing its offerings in the off-road and industrial sectors.
Product Offerings and Capabilities
Scania Industrial Batteries will provide a comprehensive range of battery systems designed for construction site vehicles and similar off-road applications. These systems will range from 21 to 624 kWh and up to 1000 volts. Customers can purchase these systems as standalone products or as part of a complete electric powertrain.
The new division aims to lead the electrification of off-road applications, supporting customers in transitioning to sustainable solutions. By combining the agility and speed of the newly acquired company with Scania’s engineering expertise and global network, the company is well-positioned to accelerate electrification in challenging off-road environments.
Commitment to Sustainability
Scania’s expansion into off-road battery manufacturing aligns with its commitment to sustainable transport solutions. The company now offers battery solutions for buses, trucks, and industrial off-road applications, all compatible with Scania’s existing electric drive components. This compatibility enables faster development, testing, and commissioning of construction machinery, emphasizing the importance of batteries as critical systems impacting performance, efficiency, and uptime.
Elin Åkerström, CEO of Scania Industrial Batteries, highlighted the company’s deep expertise and experience in battery systems, assuring customers of high-quality solutions engineered for performance and sustainability in the toughest environments.
