Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a major milestone for India’s electric vehicle (EV) sector: the country is set to export EVs to more than 100 countries, positioning India as a global hub for clean mobility. The announcement was made during the ET World Leaders Forum 2025, highlighting India’s growing capabilities in manufacturing, research, and sustainable transportation.
Expanding India’s Global Footprint
PM Modi emphasised that India’s EV export initiative represents a “new success story” for the nation’s manufacturing and technology sectors. Over the past decade, India’s auto exports have more than doubled, rising from ₹50,000 crore in 2014 to ₹1.2 lakh crore annually. The export portfolio has also diversified to include metro coaches, rail coaches, and locomotives, alongside automobiles and two-wheelers.
“India is now ready to supply clean mobility solutions to the world,” PM Modi said, stressing the strategic importance of electric vehicles in shaping the country’s future trade and industrial landscape.
Focus on Indigenous Innovation
The Prime Minister highlighted the role of domestic research and innovation in achieving this milestone. While foreign expertise contributes to production, it is India’s homegrown R&D ecosystem that will determine the nation’s leadership in the global EV market. PM Modi urged companies and researchers to focus on quality, design, and technology to meet international standards.
Positive Economic Backdrop
The announcement comes amid strong economic indicators for India. PM Modi pointed out that June 2025 saw a record 22 lakh new EPFO enrolments, foreign exchange reserves reached all-time highs, and inflation remained at its lowest level since 2017. India’s solar production capacity has also surged from 2.5 GW in 2014 to 100 GW today.
Implications for the EV Industry
The EV export push offers significant opportunities for both established and emerging companies. Export-ready businesses may gain from policy support, while others will need to invest in research, manufacturing excellence, and global compliance to compete internationally.
“This initiative is not just about numbers but about sending a strong message: India is ready to lead in sustainable electric mobility,” PM Modi concluded, underlining the country’s commitment to Make in India and global clean energy leadership.
