The Ministry of Heavy Industries’ Electric Vehicle Taskforce led the first stakeholder engagement on the policy and regulatory framework for battery swapping.

Dr Hanif Qureshi, IPS, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Heavy Industries, Government of India, led the consultation, which included Battery Swap Operators (BSOs), Fleet Operators, and officials from several Ministries.

The discussions, led by Dr. Himani Jain, Senior Programme Lead at the Council on Energy, Environment, and Water (CEEW), and Mr. Dilip Chenoy of the India Battery Swapping Association, focused on the potential of battery-swapping technology to accelerate electric mobility adoption in the country. Addressing immediate and long-term infrastructural, operational, and legislative difficulties is critical for broad deployment of battery-swapping systems.

Notably, stakeholders from all sectors actively shared their views and opinions, enabling a thorough discourse aimed at developing solid rules for battery-swapping scaling in India.
This joint endeavour, which aligns with India’s Electric Vehicle (EV) ecosystem vision, demonstrates the country’s commitment to sustainable mobility, as described in the #ViksitBharat Framework. The EV task force, led by the Ministry of Heavy Industries and supported by leading industry bodies such as FICCI, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), and the Confederation of Indian Industry, aims to collect actionable insights and recommendations to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles across the country.
