Spanish energy giant Iberdrola has strengthened its commitment to sustainable mobility and innovation by leading a €1 million financing round for TRIBBU, Spain’s leading urban carpooling platform, through its PERSEO programme. The investment underscores Iberdrola’s dedication to promoting efficient, affordable, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions across the country.
About the Investment
The funding comes via Iberdrola’s PERSEO initiative, established nearly two decades ago to support high-impact entrepreneurial projects. TRIBBU, formerly known as Hoop Carpool, has expanded its services from companies and universities to individual users, now boasting 55,000 registered users and facilitating over 500,000 trips.
With Iberdrola’s backing, TRIBBU aims to achieve 15 million shared journeys by 2027, potentially reducing over 60 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions. Each shared trip generates certified energy savings, convertible into financial incentives through Spain’s Energy Saving Certificates (CAE) system. Additionally, drivers can earn roughly €1 per shared journey via the platform’s Bono Energético (Energy Voucher).
Strategic Significance
This partnership highlights Iberdrola’s role in fostering innovation and sustainability. By investing in TRIBBU, Iberdrola not only supports a platform that promotes eco-friendly commuting but also reinforces its broader strategy of collaborating with startups to accelerate the green transition.
Iberdrola’s PERSEO programme has supported over 30 high-growth companies and engages more than 300 startups annually, promoting solutions in digitalisation, electrification, automation, and clean energy innovation. The program combines venture capital investments, strategic alliances, innovation calls, and pilot projects to accelerate the implementation of disruptive technologies.
Environmental and Social Impact
TRIBBU’s expansion into individual users helps make carpooling accessible to a wider audience, offering both economic and environmental benefits. The initiative reduces traffic congestion, cuts fuel consumption, and fosters a culture of sustainable commuting in urban centers across Spain.
Iberdrola’s investment in TRIBBU aligns with its broader commitment to decarbonisation, smart mobility, and energy efficiency, showcasing how corporate partnerships can drive positive environmental change while supporting entrepreneurial innovation.
