Hyundai Motor Company has officially launched commercial sales of its all-new 2026 Universe hydrogen-electric bus, featuring one of the longest driving ranges in the segment—up to 960.4 kilometres per fuelling. This marks a major upgrade from the previous model, which offered a maximum range of 635 kilometres.
The new Universe bus retains the same 180 kW hydrogen fuel cell system and 48.2 kWh battery, but its motor output has been enhanced to 350 kW, up from 335 kW, delivering more robust performance for long-distance intercity travel. Hyundai has also introduced a dual-motor setup for improved regenerative braking and smoother gear transitions, with an integrated motor and transmission system designed to reduce component connections and boost durability.
The 2026 Universe comes in new variants, including a 12-metre-long Prime trim, alongside the existing 11.7-metre option. The updated lineup includes a range of premium features such as:
-
Driver-side air conditioning
-
Wireless smartphone charging
-
LED reading lights
-
Premium passenger seating with adjustable headrests, expandable leg rests, cup holders, map pockets, and high-speed USB ports
Safety has also been significantly enhanced. A new 5-minute battery fire-delay system is now in place, delaying external flame exposure after a thermal event and issuing alerts via lights, sounds, and display warnings within a minute. The bus also features automatic hydrogen and battery system lockdowns during collisions to prevent secondary hazards.
Hyundai aims to expand its leadership in hydrogen mobility through such innovations. A Hyundai official stated, “Hyundai Motor Company is continuously working to lead the hydrogen society. We ask for customers’ interest in the newly introduced 12-metre-long Universe hydrogen electric bus.”
With this latest launch, Hyundai continues to position itself at the forefront of sustainable heavy vehicle transport, targeting public and private intercity transport providers looking for clean and efficient alternatives to diesel buses.
