Incorporating domestically produced AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries into its product selection will make Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) the nation’s first vehicle Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). Under an existing procurement arrangement with Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Limited (ARE&M), these batteries would be supplied.

The AGM batteries, which are scheduled for launch in Q4 of FY 2024–2025, will function as SLI (Starting, Lighting, and Ignition) batteries, in line with HMIL’s emphasis on innovation and localization.

Important characteristics of AGM batteries made in India:

Advanced Technology: AGM batteries improve performance under heavy electrical loads by enabling rapid charging, less maintenance, and improved power efficiency.

Economic and Environmental Benefits: The program minimizes carbon footprints, promotes local job growth, and lessens reliance on imports.

Compliant with RDE: The batteries have undergone extensive testing at Hyundai Motor Company’s R&D facility in South Korea and satisfy India’s exacting pollution regulations.

Future-Ready Vehicles: Next-generation HMIL models with enhanced performance, lower emissions, and longer range are supported by these batteries.

Speaking enthusiastically about the partnership, Harshavardhana Gourineni, Executive Director of Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Limited, said, “This partnership marks a significant milestone in delivering world-class energy solutions that align with stringent RDE (Real Driving Emissions) norms, including India’s BS6 Phase 2 standards.”

At its Chennai location, HMIL has collaborations with 194 vendors for more than 1,238 components as part of its continuous efforts to improve localization. It is anticipated that HMIL’s next factory in Talegaon, Maharashtra, will strengthen its dedication to innovation and sustainability by concentrating on growing its localized supply chain.
