General Motors’ energy solutions division, GM Energy, is rapidly building momentum as a key enabler of the company’s all-electric vision, reporting 30% month-over-month revenue growth and a fivefold increase in sales volume for its charging and energy products since January 2025. The division’s progress underscores GM’s commitment to making electric mobility accessible, reliable, and transformative for its customers.
Expanding Energy Access Nationwide
Established to break down barriers to EV ownership, GM Energy provides reliable and convenient charging solutions at home and in public, empowering customers to manage their energy usage efficiently. Over the past year, the division has expanded its product portfolio across all 50 states, offering 10 innovative products, including:
-
Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) Bi-Directional Charging: Compatible GM EVs can power properly equipped homes during outages.
-
GM Energy PowerBank: A stationary home energy storage solution storing electricity from the grid or solar panels.
-
Universal Charging Adapters: Facilitate seamless connectivity across different charging standards and support the transition to a single charging standard.
Seven out of ten GM electric vehicles are now sold with a GM Energy product, including nearly 100,000 adapters sold to date, demonstrating the increasing customer adoption of smart energy solutions.
Driving Public Charging Infrastructure
GM Energy is actively collaborating with industry leaders such as EVgo, Pilot, and ChargePoint and has co-founded the IONNA joint venture with other automakers to expand public fast-charging access. Currently, GM EV owners have access to over 250,000 charging stations across North America, with a target of deploying 35,000 GM Energy-invested fast charging stalls by 2030.
The company focuses not only on quantity but also on customer experience, providing amenities like restrooms, food, retail options, weather-protected setups, and truck-friendly pass-through designs. GM Energy’s charging networks consistently rank among the top three for customer satisfaction metrics, ensuring convenience for long-distance and commercial EV users.
Integrating Energy and Mobility
GM Energy is pioneering vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies to enhance grid resilience and energy security. Pilot programs in California and Texas demonstrate how GM EVs can provide backup power or feed electricity back to the grid, creating a more flexible and sustainable energy ecosystem.
The division is also actively supporting the adoption of the North American Charging Standard (NACS). The 2026 Cadillac OPTIQ and the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt will be the first GM models equipped with native NACS inlets, ensuring seamless compatibility and improved charging efficiency for future EV customers.
Industry Leadership and Strategic Partnerships
Wade Sheffer, Vice President of GM Energy, emphasized,
“Our progress demonstrates how quickly customers are embracing smart energy solutions that make electric mobility simpler, cleaner, and more efficient. By integrating with utilities, standard-setting bodies, and industry partners, GM Energy ensures our customers are at the forefront of innovation.”
Through its integrated approach, GM Energy continues to position General Motors as a leader in the convergence of mobility and energy, accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles, bidirectional power solutions, and sustainable energy management across North America.
