Bengaluru-based energy-tech startup Exponent Energy has launched a breakthrough retrofit technology, enabling conversion of CNG and LPG-powered autorickshaws into fully electric vehicles within just 24 hours. The innovation, called “Exponent Oto,” aims to accelerate India’s transition to sustainable mobility by electrifying the existing fleet of three-wheelers rather than relying solely on new EV production.
The company’s new retrofit solution replaces conventional components such as the engine, gearbox, fuel tank, and exhaust system with a complete electric powertrain, including Exponent’s proprietary battery pack, motor, controller, and charging interface. Once converted, the electric autos can be fully charged in just 15 minutes using Exponent’s rapid charging network—one of the fastest systems in India’s EV segment.
Fast, Reliable, and Scalable Retrofit Solution
Exponent Energy’s Oto retrofit system is designed to simplify and democratise electric mobility in India’s massive autorickshaw ecosystem. Retrofitted vehicles are capable of delivering a range of 140–150 km per charge, accelerating from 0–30 km/h in under 4.5 seconds, and come with a 5-year or 3,000-cycle warranty.
According to the company, the conversion process can be completed within 24 hours, minimising downtime for auto drivers and ensuring a quick return to service. The solution is tailored for affordability, with zero down payment, flexible EMI options, and an assured buyback after three years, providing drivers up to ₹5,000 in monthly savings compared to operating traditional CNG or LPG vehicles.
A Major Step Toward Zero-Emission Urban Mobility
India’s autorickshaw fleet—numbering over 20 lakh vehicles—represents one of the most critical segments for urban transport emissions. By offering a quick and cost-effective retrofit model, Exponent Energy’s initiative has the potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions and fossil fuel dependence, contributing to India’s broader clean mobility targets.
Speaking about the launch, Arun Vinayak, Co-founder and CEO of Exponent Energy, said,
“Exponent Oto is designed to make electrification simple, fast, and financially viable for drivers. India doesn’t need to wait decades for an EV-only fleet. By retrofitting the existing ICE autos, we can accelerate adoption and make every kilometer greener—starting today.”
The company plans to expand its retrofit operations to multiple cities across India and is partnering with fleet operators, auto associations, and financiers to ensure large-scale adoption.
Exponent Energy’s innovation not only highlights India’s engineering capabilities but also positions the company as a frontrunner in developing scalable retrofit ecosystems—a key bridge between today’s fuel-driven transport and tomorrow’s all-electric future.
