New Compact EV to Rival Creta Electric and eVitara
In a significant development for the Indian EV market, BYD—one of the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturers—appears poised to expand its presence in the country with the anticipated launch of the BYD Atto 2. The compact electric SUV was recently spotted testing on Indian roads, hinting at its imminent arrival. The test mule closely resembles the international version currently on sale in markets like China, Brazil, and Europe.
Despite being heavily camouflaged, the vehicle reveals several design cues that align with the global model. These include a distinctive rear spoiler, uniquely styled taillamps, a recognisable rear bumper, and flowing curves on the body panels. Other notable features observed include sleek LED headlamps, bold body cladding, and a fresh design for the alloy wheels, all contributing to a sporty, urban aesthetic.
The international-spec BYD Atto 2 measures 4,310 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width, and 1,675 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,620 mm. These dimensions position it as a direct competitor to the upcoming Hyundai Creta Electric and Maruti Suzuki’s first EV offering in India, likely to be branded as either the eVitara or eEscudo.
Under the hood, or more accurately, beneath the floor, the Atto 2 is equipped with a 45.1 kWh battery pack. This powers a 175 hp electric motor that produces 290 Nm of torque. The setup offers a claimed range of 380 km on a single charge and a top speed limited to 160 km/h. When needed, the battery can be recharged using a 65 kW DC fast charger, enabling quicker turnarounds for urban commuters and fleet operators alike.
As BYD continues testing and refining the model for Indian roads, industry experts expect the official launch to follow soon—potentially shaking up the country’s compact EV segment.
