In a recent interaction with Sanjana Negi, Prashant Kumar, the co-founder and CEO of Zingbus, shared insights on how the company is transforming intercity bus travel across India. Kumar emphasized that Zingbus is not just a bus-booking platform but a technology-driven mobility solution aiming to enhance convenience, safety, and comfort for passengers nationwide.

He highlighted the company’s focus on operational efficiency, using real-time data analytics, route optimization, and automated ticketing systems to streamline travel for commuters. Kumar also discussed how Zingbus is empowering local bus operators, offering them access to a wider customer base while maintaining high service standards.

Addressing industry trends, Kumar pointed to rising demand for digital mobility solutions post-pandemic, as travelers increasingly prefer reliable and hygienic transport options. He also shared the company’s growth strategy, which includes expanding its fleet, introducing premium services, and leveraging AI-driven tools to enhance passenger experience.

Kumar’s vision reflects a broader shift in India’s intercity travel market, where technology is enabling smarter, safer, and more customer-centric journeys. With Zingbus, Kumar aims to bridge the gap between traditional bus travel and modern mobility expectations, setting new benchmarks in the sector.

zingbus has rapidly expanded its intercity network across India. Could you share your upcoming expansion plans and how you aim to improve connectivity across Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities?

India is a high-potential mobility market with diversified travel needs and strong demand for intercity travel. This expansion at zingbus is driven by almost five years of data and insights from 4–5 million customer interactions, helping us identify routes that are underserved and scalable monetization opportunities across almost 50% of the market. As market leaders, at the center of this business are brand recall and market share strengthening exercises via a team-led, ecosystem-first approach, working in tandem with local operators to realize sustainable growth. Safety and sustainability are at the heart of all our strategies. Our operations are backed by intensive safety systems, such as Driver Monitoring Systems, speed limits capped at 80 km/hr, and dedicated women safety measures. Further, we are coupled with green mobility in the form of initiatives like bio toilets, EV adoption and tracking carbon emissions, in order to help build safer and more sustainable intercity travel.

How does zingbus plan to balance route expansion with maintaining operational efficiency and affordability for passengers in emerging regions?

Balancing growth with efficiency is central to our expansion strategy. zingbus follows a data-first approach to route planning, ensuring every new route is demand-driven and operationally viable. We optimize fleet utilization, scheduling, and occupancy rates through predictive analytics, which helps control costs without compromising service quality. Strategic partnerships with fleet operators also allow us to maintain competitive pricing. By combining operational discipline with technology-led efficiencies, we ensure affordability for passengers while sustainably scaling across emerging regions.

Technology has been a key differentiator for zingbus. What are some of the latest innovations in your booking platform, app interface, or real-time tracking systems that are redefining the commuter experience?

Technology and operations form the backbone at zingbus, with a tech and ops-led execution model driven by real-time modelling, GPS integration, and minimal human intervention. Innovation here is all about execution excellence, backed by many operational upgrades: enhanced seating, women-friendly features, and the most advanced Driver Monitoring System. Its strong backend with proprietary software, integrating seamlessly with manual processes, operations, drivers, and both operator and consumer apps, presents a compelling competitive advantage.

      EV, Multimodal & Expansion Strategy

zingbus is developing an end-to-end mobility ecosystem with a key focus on EV adoption, multimodal integration, and first- and last-mile connectivity. Tier-wise expansion across Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 cities, together with local operator integration, supports scalable, standardized bus travel.

      Technology & Data Readiness

The technology stack and data systems are complete and in place, positioning zingbus to grow and continue innovating.

With the rise of digital personalization, how is zingbus using data analytics or AI to enhance comfort, safety, and convenience for travelers?

At zingbus, we apply analytics and AI to get the right trade-off between pricing and customer experience. Our pricing algorithm is informed by real-time demand behavior and use of services, which enables us to be competitive as well as cost-effective for the customer. Data analysis for customer behavior and preferences enables us to offer high levels of customer experience customization towards convenience and efficient route planning with offline discoverability.

Reliable data is an essential element for ensuring transparency and integrity are maintained. Cost analysis helps make decisions on fair and competitive tariffs, and data collected over a period of four years helps ensure vehicles are checked on a consistent basis. This approach, therefore, helps make people enjoy a safe, comfortable, and economical mode of travel without diminishing the service aspect.

Sustainability is becoming integral to mobility companies. Could you elaborate on the green initiatives zingbus is implementing to minimize its carbon footprint and move toward cleaner transportation solutions?

Sustainability is an integral part of the growth plans of zingbus. We promote intercity travel between cities, reducing reliance on private vehicles and carbon emissions. Bio-toilets are being fully integrated into the fleet for sustainable waste management, and we are also working on testing the adoption of electric vehicles as part of our future plans for sustainable mobility. Technology-based route optimization, fuel efficiency, and data-driven carbon offsetting, combined with tech-savvy initiatives such as paperless tickets, make it necessary for zingbus to incorporate sustainable best practices for intercity travel.

Is zingbus exploring the integration of electric or alternative-fuel buses into its fleet as part of its long-term sustainability roadmap?

As part of a long-term sustainability roadmap, zingbus has recently launched electric buses on the Delhi to Dehradun route, demonstrating its commitment to more sustainable transportation alternatives. zingbus Plus Electric retains all the hallmarks of the zingbus Plus experience — premium comfort, professional crew, digital-first convenience, and proven reliability now powered by a sustainable backbone. In partnership with Jio-bp, zingbus is building the future of intercity mobility by electrifying key routes and expanding the charging ecosystem. The company’s vision is bold: to deploy 3,000 electric buses by 2030  and planning to operate 70 electric buses within the next 12 months across North and South India, steadily expanding its green mobility footprint while empowering hundreds of small and medium-sized operators to transition into EVs rather than replacing them.

Safety remains a top concern for intercity travelers. What steps has zingbus taken to ensure passenger safety, vehicle maintenance, and regulatory compliance across its network?

Safety is one of the key considerations for zingbus in the intercity bus transport sector, which it operates with over four years of experience. At zingbus, we emphasize maintaining our buses to avoid breakdowns. The Driver Monitoring System and GPS Tracker help us track the behavior and adherence to speed limits and routes in real-time, with a maximum speed of 80 km/hr.

Women safety is enhanced by verified drivers, real-time tracking, and a proper grievance redressal system regarding both physical as well as online complaints. Locked boarding and seating systems further improve passenger safety. Further, effective maintenance services, speed regulation, and optimal bus operations bring down fuel consumption and carbon emissions in the environment, thereby reiterating our focus on safe and environmentally friendly intercity transportation services.

Taking ahead, how do you see the intercity bus travel segment evolving over the next five years, and what role will zingbus play in shaping the future of connected, sustainable public transport in India?

In these challenging times, the user-friendly nature of the service has made it an indispensable source of comfort, relied on by many. India is a very promising market for intercity mobility, having a strong foundation across both train and bus travels. With more than five years of diverse data covering nearly 4–5 million collections, supported by this sector, there are very attractive opportunities with close to 50 percent of the market holding clear monetisation potential. The market leaders should work further on brand recall and gain in market share through a team-led, execution-driven approach. Situated on a strong philosophical belief in long-term value creation, the objective is to empower ecosystem operators and enable a more efficient, connected, and future-ready public mobility network across India.
