Xiaomi Corporation has officially inaugurated its first European electric vehicle (EV) research, development, and design centre in Munich, Germany, marking the company’s first major expansion in vehicle engineering and design outside China. The new facility will play a crucial role in Xiaomi’s strategy to launch its EVs in Europe by 2027, aligning with the company’s broader vision of integrating smart lifestyle, connected mobility, and intelligent systems under its “Human x Car x Home” initiative.

Strategic Focus of the Munich Centre

The Munich EV hub is designed to handle performance vehicle projects, advanced EV technology development, design innovation, user experience, and research into smart mobility solutions. Xiaomi aims to leverage Munich’s status as a European automotive engineering and design hub to ensure that its electric vehicles meet regional standards for safety, performance, and design preferences.

      Key focus areas include:

      • Vehicle Performance Projects: Development of high-performance EV variants tailored for the European market.

      • Design Innovation: Adapting Xiaomi’s design language to meet local tastes and aesthetic preferences.

      • User Experience & Smart Mobility: Integrating innovative features, AI-powered systems, and ecosystem solutions.

      • Localization & Safety Compliance: Aligning technology, features, and safety protocols with European regulations.

The centre will also foster collaboration with European research institutions and automotive talent, ensuring Xiaomi’s EVs are both region-specific and competitive in functionality and performance.

      Leadership and Talent Acquisition

To spearhead operations at the Munich hub, Xiaomi has recruited senior automotive professionals, including former BMW executives, reflecting the company’s commitment to excellence and high standards. Rudolf Dittrich, a seasoned BMW veteran, is reported to lead the European R&D centre. The team is initially expected to be compact and elite, with fewer than 50 engineers and designers focused on performance variants, tuning, and concept development.

      Preparing for European Market Entry

The Munich R&D and design centre is a strategic step toward Xiaomi’s 2027 EV launch in Europe. By establishing a local presence, Xiaomi seeks to:

      • Understand and comply with European regulations and safety standards.

      • Tailor vehicle features and design to regional customer preferences.

      • Strengthen its global innovation network and brand credibility in Europe.

The facility underscores Xiaomi’s ambition to become a significant player in Europe’s EV market, leveraging cutting-edge research, local expertise, and innovative vehicle designs to compete with established automotive manufacturers.
