Transport for Wales (TfW) has announced that all 22 local authorities across Wales will receive free access to a national EV infrastructure planning platform, ChargePoint Navigator, to accelerate the rollout of electric vehicle charging networks.

The platform is designed to simplify site selection, reduce planning costs, and enable data-driven decision-making for EV charger deployment. It provides a shared evidence base, allowing councils to make consistent, transparent, and cost-effective investment decisions aligned with national transport policies.

Originally funded and co-developed by UK Power Networks Distribution System Operator and Field Dynamics, the tool offers detailed insights such as grid capacity, parking availability, charging demand, and infrastructure costs, streamlining the entire planning process from site identification to installation.

ChargePoint Navigator has already been adopted by over 100 local authorities in England, achieving a 94% satisfaction rate, and this rollout marks the first national-level deployment outside England.

The initiative supports the Wales Electric Vehicle Charging Action Plan, which emphasizes a coordinated, data-led approach to EV infrastructure development. Officials highlighted that the focus is now shifting from simply increasing charger numbers to ensuring fair, strategic, and community-focused deployment across the country.

Authorities believe the move will strengthen local capabilities, improve planning efficiency, and accelerate EV adoption, while contributing to Wales’ broader decarbonisation and sustainable transport goals.
