Volvo Buses, in collaboration with its long-standing partner Manufacturing Commercial Vehicles (MCV), has officially inaugurated a state-of-the-art electric bus manufacturing facility in Cairo, Egypt. The plant, covering 10,000 square meters, was constructed in just 12 months and is dedicated to producing electric buses for European markets, reinforcing Volvo’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility.

The new facility will manufacture Volvo 7900 Electric and Electric Articulated city buses and the Volvo 8900 Electric for city and intercity routes. The first buses from this plant are expected to roll out this fall. MCV has already been producing Volvo’s complete electric buses since 2024, even during construction, with initial deliveries reaching European customers, including operators in the Benelux region such as De Lijn and Transdev.

This expansion follows Volvo Buses’ strategic decision in 2023 to cease independent complete bus manufacturing in Europe, relying instead on contract body-building partners. MCV was selected as the exclusive partner for the production of the 7900 and 8900 e-bus ranges destined for Europe.

The Cairo facility is designed to meet the highest global quality and production standards, enhancing Volvo’s capacity to cater to the growing demand for electric public transportation in Europe. It also offers greater flexibility in adapting vehicles to meet the specifications of different markets and operators.

Anna Westerberg, President of Volvo Buses, highlighted the significance of partnerships with established bodybuilders worldwide and cited MCV’s successful collaborations in the UK as an example. She emphasised that this joint effort enables Volvo to efficiently expand its electric bus presence while maintaining quality and sustainability standards.

The inauguration of the Cairo plant marks a major milestone in Volvo Buses’ global expansion strategy, aligning with its vision for sustainable transportation solutions and supporting the transition toward zero-emission public transport in Europe.
