Volvo Cars has achieved a major milestone in its global electrification journey by delivering its one millionth plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). This accomplishment highlights the Swedish automaker’s steady progress toward becoming a fully electric car manufacturer while reinforcing its leadership in sustainable mobility.
Volvo’s Electrification Milestone: One Million Plug-In Hybrids Delivered
The company’s PHEV lineup continues to play a crucial role as a bridge between internal combustion engines and pure electric vehicles. Plug-in hybrids accounted for nearly 23% of Volvo’s global sales in the first half of 2025, reflecting the brand’s strong customer adoption and confidence in its hybrid technology.
Volvo’s XC60 model emerged as Europe’s best-selling plug-in hybrid in 2024 and remains a global leader in the premium PHEV segment. Alongside the XC90, the brand’s hybrid SUVs have driven consistent growth, with total PHEV sales soaring from 46,000 units in 2019 to over 177,000 in 2024.
Sustainable Mobility Backed by Real-World Performance
Company data reveals that Volvo’s plug-in hybrids are frequently driven like full EVs — operating on electric power for nearly half of their total driving time, especially in urban environments. The brand recently launched the XC70 SUV, its first long-range plug-in hybrid, featuring an impressive electric-only range exceeding 200 km under the CLTC testing cycle.
A Strategic Bridge to Full Electrification
According to Erik Severinson, Chief Commercial Officer at Volvo Cars, plug-in hybrids continue to serve as an essential stepping stone for customers not yet ready to transition fully to electric vehicles.
“While we invest and grow in the premium fully electric segment, we will continue to innovate and refine our hybrids. These vehicles are vital for customers seeking both sustainability and convenience,” said Severinson.
Volvo remains committed to its electrification roadmap, ensuring its hybrid technology evolves in parallel with the expansion of global charging infrastructure and the growing EV ecosystem.
Over a Decade of Hybrid Leadership
Volvo’s hybrid journey began in 2012, with the launch of its first PHEV — the V60 diesel-electric estate, pioneering a new era of hybrid engineering. For several years, Volvo was the only global automaker offering a plug-in hybrid version for every model in its lineup.
Today, Volvo Cars boasts five PHEV models and six fully electric vehicles, offering customers diverse and sustainable options worldwide. This balanced portfolio strengthens Volvo’s global positioning as a leader in eco-friendly premium mobility.
With this one millionth plug-in hybrid milestone, Volvo Cars continues to redefine the future of automotive innovation — blending Scandinavian design, advanced hybrid technology, and a deep commitment to a zero-emission future.
