Volkswagen Group, along with its subsidiaries PowerCo and Elli, unveiled a series of pioneering battery and energy technologies at IAA Mobility 2025, highlighting its commitment to sustainable mobility “Made in Europe”.
A major highlight was the world premiere of Volkswagen’s first group test vehicle powered by a solid-state battery, developed in collaboration with QuantumScape. The prototype, based on Ducati’s all-electric V21L, features a custom battery system with up to 980 QSE-5 cells, promising higher energy density, faster charging, enhanced safety, and longer life cycles. While commercial deployment is expected later this decade, Volkswagen anticipates the technology will be transformative for the EV sector.
In addition, PowerCo introduced its Unified Cell and Cell-to-Pack technology, set to power the upcoming Electric Urban Car Family (Volkswagen, Škoda, CUPRA) from 2026. The new system offers 660 Wh/l energy density, up to 450 km range, and charging times under 25 minutes, combining efficiency and affordability. Production will commence this year at the Salzgitter Gigafactory, followed by expansion to Spain and Canada.
Elli, Volkswagen’s energy subsidiary, also showcased a pilot bidirectional charging project for private households, enabling EV batteries to power homes and integrate with solar energy systems. This innovation aims to enhance energy efficiency and contribute to more sustainable energy usage.
Through these advancements, Volkswagen reinforces its position as a leader in next-generation battery technologies, energy solutions, and sustainable mobility, bridging the gap between automotive innovation and environmental responsibility.
