Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast has officially inaugurated its electric vehicle manufacturing facility in Subang, West Java, Indonesia, marking a major step in strengthening its footprint across Southeast Asia. The project represents a planned investment of up to USD 1 billion, positioning Indonesia as a strategic production and export hub for right-hand-drive electric vehicles.
The inauguration underscores VinFast’s commitment to accelerating EV adoption while supporting Indonesia’s ambitions to become a regional electric mobility powerhouse.
Production Capacity and Investment Roadmap
The Subang facility spans approximately 171 hectares and has been developed under a phased investment approach. Initial investment stands at around USD 300 million, delivering an annual production capacity of 50,000 electric vehicles in Phase One.
VinFast has outlined plans to scale the plant’s capacity to as much as 350,000 vehicles per year, supported by cumulative investments reaching USD 1 billion, depending on market demand and expansion requirements.
Rapid Construction and Operational Readiness
The plant was completed within roughly 17 months from groundbreaking to inauguration, reflecting VinFast’s rapid execution capabilities. The facility is equipped with advanced automation, quality control systems, and flexible manufacturing lines designed to support multiple EV models.
Initial production will focus on vehicles tailored for Southeast Asian markets, with future export potential across the broader Asia-Pacific region.
Localisation and Supply Chain Development
A key pillar of VinFast’s Indonesia strategy is localization. The company aims to achieve over 40% local content by 2026, increasing to 60% by 2029, and up to 80% beyond 2030. This approach aligns with Indonesia’s industrial policy and supports the development of a domestic EV supply chain.
The localization drive is expected to attract component manufacturers, strengthen industrial clusters, and create thousands of direct and indirect jobs.
Boost to Indonesia’s EV Ecosystem
The new facility is set to play a pivotal role in Indonesia’s EV ecosystem by enabling local manufacturing, reducing vehicle costs, and supporting clean mobility adoption. In addition to vehicle production, VinFast is expanding its dealer network, after-sales infrastructure, and charging ecosystem to support long-term market growth.
The project also contributes to Indonesia’s broader sustainability and decarbonization goals by promoting zero-emission transportation.
Strategic Importance for VinFast’s Global Growth
The Indonesia plant represents VinFast’s first large-scale EV manufacturing base in Southeast Asia outside Vietnam. It strengthens the company’s regional resilience, reduces reliance on imports, and enhances its ability to serve high-growth emerging markets.
As VinFast continues its global expansion, the Indonesia facility is expected to become a cornerstone of its international manufacturing and export strategy.
