Vietnamese automaker VinFast has introduced an exchange program in India that allows owners of petrol vehicles to trade in their cars for locally-assembled VF 6 and VF 7 electric SUVs. The initiative is designed to accelerate EV adoption by combining financial incentives, structured financing options, and access to charging and after-sales services.
Meeting Drivers Where They Are
As electric vehicles gain traction across India, cities from Delhi to Chennai are seeing increased EV activity, including rising registrations and longer lines at fast-charging stations. VinFast’s exchange program targets conventional car owners directly, offering cash support and financing to reduce the economic barrier to switching to electric vehicles.
“Some people arrived curious. They left with a brand new EV after a test drive and a closer look at the numbers. Once they saw the monthly cost difference, the charging convenience, and our aftersales commitments, the decision felt like a natural next step,” said a VinFast sales manager, reflecting on the company’s earlier experience with similar events in Vietnam.
Vehicle Specifications and Features
- VF 6: 468 km range (MIDC), 59.6 kWh battery, DC fast charging from 10–70% in roughly 25 minutes
- VF 7: Higher-output variants with similar charging and safety features
- Both models carry five-star Bharat NCAP safety ratings and include fast charging, connected features, and advanced driver assistance systems as standard
Program Model Inspired by Vietnam
VinFast’s approach mirrors successful exchange drives in Vietnam, where hundreds of vehicles were swapped in single-day events. These drives not only reduce tailpipe emissions but also increase the visibility of EVs on city roads, helping normalize electric mobility.
Industry observers note that initiatives like these could accelerate India’s transition from petrol to electric vehicles, particularly in urban areas where charging infrastructure and vehicle accessibility are key concerns.
