With over 4.14 lakh EVs registered, Uttar Pradesh (UP) has surpassed Delhi’s 1.83 lakh and Maharashtra’s 1.79 lakh to become India’s largest EV adoption state. This important milestone demonstrates UP’s dedication to environmentally friendly transportation and its aggressive adoption of electric vehicles.
Since e-rickshaws account for around 85% of all EV sales in the state, their widespread use has played a significant role in this accomplishment. Because of their efficiency and cost, these cars have gained popularity as a form of transportation, particularly in metropolitan and semi-urban areas.
The Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy 2022 further supports the state’s EV adoption efforts. With an emphasis on boosting EV adoption, building strong charging infrastructure, and positioning Uttar Pradesh as a worldwide centre for EV and battery manufacture, this programme seeks to draw in 30,000 crore in investments and generate 10 lakh jobs.
The central government’s FAME I and FAME II programmes, which encourage the use and production of hybrid and electric vehicles in India, have also benefitted UP the most. These programs have supported and offered financial incentives for the state’s EV infrastructure development.
The UP government has authorised the installation of more than 300 new EV charging stations throughout 16 local bodies in an effort to further improve its EV ecosystem. In keeping with the state’s initiatives to increase EV users’ accessibility and convenience, Ayodhya is anticipated to receive the most number of these new charging stations.
India is expected to have 102 million EVs by 2030, making Uttar Pradesh a leader in the nation’s shift to sustainable mobility thanks to its EV adoption and infrastructure development activities. The state’s all-encompassing strategy is a template for other areas looking to encourage electric vehicles.
