Automotive component major UNO Minda has announced significant steps to deepen its presence in the electric mobility segment. The company has approved the acquisition of the remaining 49.90% stake in its joint venture with Germany-based Buehler Motor GmbH, making Uno Minda Buehler Motor Pvt. Ltd. (UMBM) a wholly owned subsidiary. Simultaneously, UNO Minda will invest up to ₹40 crore into its electric vehicle business unit, UnoMinda EV Systems Pvt. Ltd. (UMEVS), to support expansion and working capital requirements.
Full Acquisition of JV Strengthens EV Components Capability
UMBM manufactures traction motors for electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers, a crucial part of the EV powertrain ecosystem. By taking full control of the joint venture, UNO Minda aims to streamline operations, improve integration, and accelerate growth in the high-demand electric components market.
The acquisition will be completed by Q4 FY26 for a nominal cash consideration. Following the stake transfer, the current joint venture agreement will be replaced with an updated technical licensing agreement with Buehler Motor GmbH. The company clarified that the change will have no material impact on ongoing manufacturing and business continuity.
₹40 Crore Investment to Boost EV Subsidiary’s Growth
To support the rapid growth of its EV-focused operations, UNO Minda will infuse ₹40 crore into UMEVS. This investment will prioritize working capital, new product development, and scaling manufacturing of EV-specific components.
UMEVS plays a crucial role in building advanced EV technologies, complementing the company’s broader ambition to become a leading supplier of electric mobility components across two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and passenger vehicles.
Strategic Alignment With India’s EV Transition
UNO Minda has been expanding its EV footprint through multiple initiatives. Earlier in 2025, the company announced a ₹423 crore plan to develop high-voltage powertrain products for four-wheelers through another joint venture.
With the domestic EV market witnessing strong growth—particularly in the two-wheeler and three-wheeler segments—the consolidation of UMBM and continued funding of UMEVS positions UNO Minda as a stronger and more agile technology partner for OEMs.
Industry Impact and Growth Outlook
The company’s strategic moves highlight its commitment to supporting India’s accelerated shift toward clean mobility. By integrating torque motor manufacturing, enhancing technical partnerships, and scaling EV component production, UNO Minda is positioned to capture a larger share of the rapidly expanding electric vehicle market.
Experts in the industry anticipate that these steps will boost operational efficiency, foster product innovation, and facilitate increased domestic production of EV powertrain components.
