Toyota Motor Corporation has officially launched the new RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) in Japan, expanding the sixth-generation RAV4 lineup with a more powerful and longer-range electrified option. The model goes on sale nationwide with a targeted monthly sales volume of 700 units.
Built under the development concept “Life is an Adventure,” the all-new RAV4 aims to support diverse customer lifestyles while maintaining the model’s signature rugged design, strong proportions, and practical packaging. The hybrid (HEV) variant introduced in December 2025 has already been well received in the domestic market.
New-Generation Plug-in Hybrid System
The new RAV4 (PHEV) features a next-generation plug-in hybrid system built on Toyota’s energy efficient hybrid platform. It combines a 2.5-liter series-parallel hybrid system (A25A-FXS) with a newly developed large-capacity lithium-ion drive battery and E-Four electric all-wheel drive.
The system delivers a maximum output of 242 kW (329 PS), offering strong acceleration and improved off-road capability. Toyota states the system achieves world-leading energy efficiency in the mid-size SUV class (as of December 2025, according to company research).
Significantly Extended EV Driving Range
One of the key highlights is the improved BEV-mode driving range. Thanks to increased battery capacity and the adoption of silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors in the power control unit (PCU), the electric-only range has increased from approximately 95 km in the previous model to about 150 km on a full charge (internal measurement value).
This extended range enables zero-emission driving for most daily activities, including commuting, shopping, and short-distance travel.
Power Supply Capability for Outdoor and Emergency Use
The RAV4 (PHEV) also functions as a mobile power source. It features:
- A 100V external power outlet
- Up to 1,500W total output
- An in-vehicle outlet in the luggage area
- A vehicle power connector compatible with the charging inlet (not usable while driving)
In emergency situations such as natural disasters or power outages, the vehicle can supply electricity for extended periods. Using HV Power Supply Mode, it can provide power for approximately 6.5 days at a 400W load with a full battery and full tank of fuel. In Power Supply Time Priority Mode, supply duration can extend to roughly seven days (based on in-house simulator testing).
Addition of GR SPORT Grade
Toyota has also introduced a new GR SPORT (PHEV) grade to the RAV4 lineup, bringing motorsport-inspired enhancements to the electrified SUV.
The GR SPORT features:
- Aerodynamically optimized front lip and rear wing spoilers
- GR Performance Dampers® (registered trademark of Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd.)
- Reinforced GR braces for improved body rigidity
- Specially tuned suspension
- Dedicated electric power steering (EPS) tuning
The drive battery is utilized as a structural reinforcing member to enhance body rigidity and lower the center of gravity. The result is improved stability, controllability, and steering response, particularly in Sport mode.
Grade Lineup and Pricing
The RAV4 PHEV is available in two grades in Japan:
- Z (PHEV) – ¥6,000,000 (including consumption tax)
- GR SPORT (PHEV) – ¥6,300,000 (including consumption tax)
Both models use an electric continuously variable transmission (e-CVT) and E-Four electric all-wheel drive. Separate pricing applies for Okinawa, and recycling fees are not included.
With the addition of the PHEV models, the sixth-generation RAV4 lineup in Japan now consists of:
- Z (PHEV / HEV)
- Adventure (HEV)
- GR SPORT (PHEV)
Multi-Pathway Electrification Strategy
Toyota positions plug-in hybrid vehicles as one of several key technologies in its path toward carbon neutrality. Under its brand philosophy of “to you” car-making tailored to individual customers the company continues to pursue a multi-pathway strategy that includes HEVs, PHEVs, and other electrified powertrains.
In addition, Toyota announced that from spring 2026, genuine parts and accessories for the new RAV4 will be available online through UPGRADE SELECTIONS by TOYOTA UPGRADE FACTORY, allowing customers to enhance or upgrade their vehicles even after purchase.
With improved electric range, higher output, enhanced off-road performance, and extended power supply capabilities, the new RAV4 (PHEV) strengthens Toyota’s position in Japan’s electrified SUV segment while broadening its appeal to lifestyle-oriented and performance-focused buyers alike.
