Tesla has announced a broader strategic push in India, aiming not only to sell electric vehicles but also to establish a full-scale EV ecosystem designed to support long-term adoption. The company plans to build a robust charging infrastructure to make EV ownership more convenient and sustainable for Indian consumers.
Charging Infrastructure at Homes, Malls and Key Destinations
As part of its ecosystem strategy, Tesla intends to deploy a wide range of charging solutions across major Indian cities. This includes home chargers, commercial charging stations at malls, hotels, and public spaces, as well as high-speed Superchargers to address range anxiety. The company believes that building a reliable charging network is crucial for accelerating India’s shift toward electric mobility.
Focus on Improving Air Quality and Urban Sustainability
Tesla emphasised that India’s highly polluted urban centers—such as Delhi and Mumbai—need immediate adoption of cleaner mobility options. By strengthening local EV infrastructure, Tesla aims to support India’s environmental goals while aligning with its global mission of advancing sustainable transportation.
Current Operations and Sales Performance
Tesla began customer deliveries in India earlier this year and has so far sold 109 cars, all imported. While the company has opened showrooms and service touchpoints, it has not yet announced concrete plans for local manufacturing. The infrastructure expansion is expected to enhance the ownership experience and drive higher long-term sales.
