Tesla launches 6-seater Model Y L in India at ₹62 lakh, targets premium EV segment

Tesla has introduced its six-seater Model Y L in India, expanding its premium electric vehicle lineup in one of the world’s fastest-growing automotive markets.

The Model Y L is priced between ₹61.99 lakh and ₹62 lakh, positioning it as a luxury three-row electric SUV aimed at Indian families seeking larger EV options.

The launch comes as demand for three-row SUVs continues to rise in India, especially in urban premium segments. However, the vehicle enters a highly competitive and cost-sensitive market, shaped significantly by India’s 100% import duty on fully built electric vehicles, which substantially increases retail prices.

The Model Y L faces competition from premium electric SUVs including the Mercedes EQS SUV and EQB, as well as newer entrants such as the MG M9. Unlike some rivals, the Model Y L is currently being sold as a fully imported unit, limiting its ability to compete on price.

The model was first introduced in China in 2025 and is part of Tesla’s broader global expansion strategy for its larger SUV offerings.

Despite strong brand recognition, the rollout faces challenges including high pricing due to import duties and a relatively limited service and charging support network in India, which is still under development.

The launch highlights Tesla’s strategy of targeting the upper end of India’s EV market, where demand for spacious, premium electric SUVs is growing, even as affordability remains a key constraint for broader adoption.
