Tesla has filed its generative AI-powered voice assistant with China’s cyberspace regulator in Shanghai. The feature is now among 158 AI tools registered under China’s mandatory approval system for generative AI services.
China requires all generative AI tools to be registered before they can operate legally in the country. The filing is a compliance step rather than a product approval, as hundreds of similar AI systems have already been cleared.
The move comes as Tesla faces strong competition in China from domestic EV makers such as BYD and Geely, which are rapidly expanding AI-powered in-car features.
Tesla is also reportedly considering integrating China-based AI models, including DeepSeek and ByteDance’s Doubao, to support voice functions like navigation and climate control, indicating a more localized AI approach for the Chinese market.
