HYDERABAD: Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has announced an ambitious green mobility plan to operate 2,800 electric buses within the limits of Hyderabad’s Outer Ring Road (ORR) by 2027, significantly expanding the city’s clean public transport network.
The initiative forms part of the state government’s broader push to reduce urban air pollution and promote sustainable mobility. TGSRTC states that it has become the first state-run transport corporation in India to undertake large-scale retrofitting of diesel buses into electric vehicles.
As part of this strategy, the corporation has adopted retrofitting technology to convert existing diesel buses into electric ones. Tenders for the project were floated on September 15, 2025, and finalised on September 30, 2025. Under the agreement, Sai Green Mobility will retrofit 200 buses, while Kalyani Powertrain Limited will convert 40 buses.
Currently, 325 electric buses are operating from six city depots, with another 175 buses set to be inducted later this year. To support the expanded fleet, charging infrastructure is being established in 19 additional depots. Plans are also underway to build 10 new depots and 10 dedicated charging stations at an estimated cost of Rs 392 crore.
A pilot retrofitting project launched in 2023 at the Musheerabad depot has been operating successfully, strengthening confidence in the model. Authorities expect the transition to electric buses to reduce private vehicle usage, cut emissions, and improve public health outcomes across Hyderabad.
