Telangana is accelerating its electric mobility mission with a major infrastructure push, as the Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TGREDCO) gears up to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at intervals of every 25 to 30 kilometres along national and state highways. This strategic initiative aims to eliminate range anxiety, support long-distance travel, and strengthen the state’s growing EV ecosystem.
According to the plan, charging stations will be set up at suitable high-traffic locations, such as restaurants, food joints, fuel stations, and sites situated within 500 meters of power substations. The project also includes installations on government-owned land along key transport routes, ensuring accessibility for private and commercial EV users. In addition, urban spaces—such as government offices, hospitals, railway stations, bus depots, educational institutions, and public parking zones—are being evaluated for additional EV infrastructure expansion.
Currently, Telangana hosts over 1,030 public EV charging stations, with Hyderabad alone accounting for nearly 600. Encouraged by rapid EV adoption and rising power demand, TGREDCO aims to grow this number significantly, targeting 6,000 charging stations by 2030 and a massive 12,000 installations by 2035. The demand for EV charging has surged sharply, with consumption rising from 2.60 million units (MU) in September 2024 to 10.15 MU in September 2025. A major share of this demand comes from Telangana State Road Transport Corporation’s electric bus fleet, which consumed 7.81 MU in the same period.
Setting up a 60 kW fast charger typically costs around ₹15 lakh, including charger hardware, transformers, cables, and civil works. TGREDCO has already received more than 1,500 applications from private entities interested in hosting charging stations under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.
To enhance user convenience, the state is developing a unified EV charging mobile application, which will allow users to locate nearby charging stations, check availability, book slots, and access real-time updates.
With this systematic expansion, Telangana aims to become one of India’s most EV-friendly states, supporting both environmental sustainability and economic growth. The move is expected to boost intercity travel, accelerate EV adoption, and position Telangana as a leading hub for green mobility infrastructure in the southern region.
