The Telangana state government has issued a strict directive requiring all state departments to procure only electric vehicles (EVs) going forward. Announced by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, the move aims to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the government’s vehicle fleet and promote clean mobility within the state.
The mandate applies most strongly to the Core Urban Region, which covers the Greater Hyderabad limits. All new purchases of petrol or diesel vehicles for official use are now banned. Officials are also instructed to hire only electric vehicles when private cars are needed for government work within the city. Fleet managers will prioritize electric models such as the Tata Nexon EV, Tata Tigor EV, and Mahindra XUV400, commonly featured in government tenders nationwide.
This initiative aligns with Telangana’s broader EV policy, which offers 100% road tax and registration fee exemptions on all categories of electric vehicles until December 2026. The incentives have already driven a sharp rise in private EV registrations, with around one lakh electric vehicles sold in the past year. By mandating EVs for government use, the state seeks to lead by example and maintain a consistent baseline of electric vehicle adoption.
In addition to passenger cars, Telangana is expanding its public transport electrification. The state transport corporation currently runs over 800 electric buses and plans to induct another 2,800. Smaller municipalities such as Warangal and Nizamabad will also receive dedicated electric bus fleets under central government schemes.
The government is simultaneously boosting charging infrastructure across offices, educational institutions, and gated communities. Officials are also planning a modern bus terminal at Shamshabad, strategically located near proposed high-speed rail corridors connecting Hyderabad with Pune, Bengaluru, and Chennai.
With this policy, Telangana is positioning itself as a model state for EV adoption, providing both environmental benefits and a reliable bulk market for electric vehicle manufacturers over the coming years.
