Tata Motors, India’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Green Energy Mobility Solutions Pvt. Ltd. (GEMS), the electric mobility division of Universal Bus Services (UBS), to supply 100 Magna EV intercity coaches. The landmark agreement was formalized during the Passenger Vehicle Expo 2.0 held in Chennai.
The MoU signing took place in the presence of Dr. T.R.B. Rajaa, Hon’ble Minister for Industries, Government of Tamil Nadu, along with senior government officials and members of the All Omni Bus Owners Association (AOBOA), signaling growing state-level support for sustainable mobility solutions.
Magna EV Coach: Designed for Long-Distance Green Travel
The Tata Magna EV is a fully electric, long-distance coach with a 44-seater configuration and a range of up to 300 km per charge. Built for comfort and safety, it features an Electronic Braking System (EBS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and ergonomically designed seats—making it a compelling option for intercity travel.
Speaking at the MoU ceremony, Dr. T.R.B. Rajaa hailed the development as a “significant step towards greener and safer public transportation” in Tamil Nadu. He noted that initiatives like these align with the state’s goal to become a leader in clean and future-ready transportation systems.
Strategic Collaboration to Accelerate Sustainable Mobility
Sunil Kumar Ravindran, Managing Partner at UBS, emphasized that the agreement represents a milestone in UBS’s ongoing transition to sustainable transport. “With the support of Tata Motors, we are confident in redefining intercity travel while contributing meaningfully to environmental responsibility,” he said.
Anand S, Vice President and Head of Commercial Passenger Vehicle Business at Tata Motors, echoed the sentiment: “The Tata Magna EV has been designed to redefine long-distance travel in India. Our partnership with GEMS is a testimony to the growing demand for clean mobility solutions in the intercity segment.”
Tata Motors: Leading India’s E-Bus Market
Tata Motors continues to lead India’s electric bus segment, with more than 3,600 electric buses operating in 11 cities nationwide. These buses have collectively clocked over 34 crore kilometres, delivering an impressive 95%+ uptime, underlining the company’s commitment to reliability and innovation in public mobility.
This new deal further cements Tata Motors’ position as a frontrunner in India’s e-mobility sector and supports the national push towards zero-emission commercial transportation—especially for long-distance and high-volume routes.
As India’s transportation networks transition toward sustainability, collaborations like this between OEMs and mobility operators are expected to play a critical role in shaping the future of intercity travel.
