The Supreme Court of India sought responses from the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking clearer rules and easier approvals for installing electric vehicle (EV) charging points in housing societies.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi took cognisance of the difficulties faced by electric vehicle (EV) owners in residential complexes, particularly in getting approvals for installing charging points.
The Supreme Court of India issued notices to the Union Government and the Uttar Pradesh government on a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking the implementation of a uniform framework to facilitate EV charging infrastructure in housing societies.
The petition highlighted procedural hurdles, lack of standardised guidelines, and objections from housing associations that often prevent residents from setting up EV chargers. The bench noted the importance of addressing these barriers to promote sustainable mobility in urban areas.
The matter will be heard again after the authorities file their responses.
