SUN Mobility, a pioneer in providing universal energy infrastructure and battery swapping solutions, announced that it has received the industry’s first AIS 038 certification for an indigenously developed and designed swappable high-voltage battery platform, for truck and bus applications. The company’s journey began in the year 2019 with India’s first swappable battery system for buses. It has since evolved into a comprehensive, high-voltage ecosystem tailored for Heavy Electric Vehicles (HEVs) comprising both buses and trucks, one that promises greater operational flexibility, better economics, reduced downtime, alleviated range anxiety, no technology or battery performance concerns and improved financing options for the end customers. SUN Mobility’s HEV Business has filed over 160+ Intellectual Property (IPs), with 40+ IPs granted so far.

The certification was awarded by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Chakan, following exhaustive testing that validated the platform’s safety, performance, and reliability for commercial applications — marking a significant milestone in India’s heavy commercial vehicle electrification journey. The certification comes at a critical inflection point for India’s commercial EV ecosystem. With the government’s PM e-DRIVE scheme accelerating the procurement of electric buses and trucks, and commitments to decarbonize hard to abate sectors, the demand for reliable, cost-effective EV solutions has never been greater. SUN Mobility’s AIS 038-certified platform directly addresses this need, providing a verified, modular and scalable solution for the segment.

The platform is available in two variants — 50 kWh and 100 kWh, and combinations thereof, both operating in the 660V high-voltage category. Its OEM-agnostic design supports both new vehicle integration and retrofit applications, allowing fleet operators to optimize energy capacity based on operational needs.

Ashok Agarwal, CEO, SUN Mobility – HEV Business, said, “Induction of swap-enabled Heavy Electric Vehicles will be imperative to bring EV adoption from the margins to mainstream. The AIS-038 certification is a reaffirmation of SUN Mobility’s mission — to democratize EV adoption through Made in India battery swapping solutions for the World.”

Naveen Chopra, Chief Technology Officer & Chief Operating Officer (Manufacturing Operations), SUN Mobility – HEV Business, said, “The development of this high-voltage swappable battery platform marks a significant step forward in addressing the complex performance and reliability requirements of heavy commercial vehicles. Achieving AIS 038 certification for an indigenously designed system validates the robustness of our engineering and our ability to build scalable, modular solutions tailored for real-world operating conditions.”

The company’s indigenous development of this platform underscores India’s growing capability to design and manufacture EV technology that meets global safety benchmarks, reinforcing the vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat in the clean energy and mobility sector.

With this achievement, SUN Mobility continues to strengthen its position as a technology leader in the commercial EV segment, supporting India’s transition toward sustainable and scalable mobility solutions.
