Sony Honda Mobility has officially halted the development of its AFEELA electric vehicles, including the highly anticipated AFEELA 1 and a second model in the pipeline. The decision comes after strategic reassessments by parent companies Sony Group Corporation and Honda Motor Co Ltd.
Launched in 2022, the AFEELA project aimed to combine Sony’s strengths in software, sensors, and in-car entertainment with Honda’s automotive engineering expertise to create a premium, tech-forward EV brand. Vehicles were expected to feature advanced driver-assistance systems, immersive entertainment, and seamless connectivity.
However, changes in Honda’s electrification strategy restricted access to critical technologies and resources for SHM, making the project no longer viable.
Customers who pre-ordered the AFEELA 1 in California will receive full refunds. SHM has indicated that it will continue exploring future business opportunities with both Sony and Honda, though no new vehicle launches have been announced at this time.
The cancellation marks a significant shift in the joint venture’s approach to premium EV development, underscoring the challenges of integrating cutting-edge tech with automotive production.
