Skoda Auto India, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, has announced plans to launch its first locally produced electric vehicle (EV) in India between 2027 and 2028. The company aims to establish a localised supplier base and develop the necessary charging infrastructure before entering India’s rapidly expanding EV market.
Strategic Timeline for Indian EV Market
According to Ashish Gupta, Brand Director of Skoda Auto India, the company is evaluating the EV launch timeline to ensure readiness of suppliers and infrastructure. Gupta noted that the 2027–28 timeline allows sufficient time to build a robust supplier ecosystem and ensure charging networks are adequately developed to support EV adoption in India.
The executive highlighted that the electric vehicle segment currently represents 10–12% of the total automotive market and is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years. By the proposed launch window, Gupta expects a favourable policy framework to further support EV growth in India.
Current Market Presence and Expansion Plans
Skoda Auto India currently offers four models in the country: three sedans and one compact SUV, with a market share of 1.7% by volume. The company plans to expand its customer touchpoints from 315 to 350 by 2025, targeting Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, signalling a strong intent to increase brand visibility and accessibility.
The Pune production facility serves as Skoda India’s base, which also exports vehicles to the Middle East and Africa, ensuring alignment with the company’s global operations.
Aligning with Global Electric Vehicle Strategy
This EV initiative is part of Skoda’s broader global strategy to expand its electric car portfolio in the premium segment. By localising production, Skoda aims to deliver a vehicle tailored for Indian conditions while maintaining premium performance and quality standards. The move reinforces Skoda’s commitment to sustainable mobility and positions it to compete effectively in India’s growing EV market.
As the Indian automotive sector increasingly shifts toward electric mobility, Skoda’s strategic plans reflect the company’s focus on long-term growth, infrastructure readiness, and meeting consumer expectations for high-quality EVs.
