The national standard for electric vehicle (EV) charging in Singapore will be upgraded from April 1 to support new technologies, including wireless charging, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Enterprise Singapore said.
The existing Technical Reference 25, in place since 2010, will be replaced by Singapore Standard SS 722, which provides updated specifications and guidelines for the design, installation, maintenance, and operation of EV charging stations.
The revision follows a review conducted from September 2020 to January 2022 by representatives from 27 organisations, including the Singapore branches of carmakers BYD and EV Charging Tesla. The review focused on incorporating emerging charging solutions and defining infrastructure requirements for safe installation and operation.
Under the new standard, wireless EV charging allows vehicles to charge simply by parking over a charging pad, eliminating the need for cables. Safety requirements for this emerging technology are included in the updated standard.
