In a significant development for the global electric vehicle (EV) and semiconductor industries, Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong and Mercedes-Benz Group Chairman Ola Källenius are set to meet in Seoul next week. The meeting aims to explore strategic cooperation in EV batteries, semiconductors, OLED displays, and other advanced automotive technologies.

According to some reports, the high-level discussion marks a new phase in the collaboration between one of the world’s leading technology conglomerates and one of its most prestigious automobile manufacturers. The leaders are expected to evaluate potential joint ventures and technology partnerships that could redefine the EV supply chain across Asia and Europe.

Sources suggest that Samsung SDI, the group’s battery manufacturing arm, could play a key role in Mercedes-Benz’s future EV lineup. While the German automaker currently sources batteries from companies such as LG Energy Solution and SK On, the inclusion of Samsung SDI could help diversify its supplier base and ensure greater technological resilience.

Beyond batteries, the meeting is expected to touch upon automotive semiconductors and OLED display technologies—areas where Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display hold substantial global expertise. Samsung Display already supplies OLED panels to Mercedes-Benz’s luxury Maybach models, and both sides are reportedly looking to expand this partnership to additional premium and electric models in the near future.

Industry analysts note that this engagement reflects a broader strategic push by automakers to secure stable supply chains amid global semiconductor shortages and evolving EV market demands. For Samsung, expanding its footprint in automotive components offers an opportunity to leverage its advanced battery, display, and chip technologies beyond consumer electronics.

Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz continues to accelerate its electrification strategy under the “Electric Only” vision, targeting a fully electric vehicle lineup by the end of the decade. Collaborations with cutting-edge suppliers like Samsung could help the automaker strengthen its innovation ecosystem and maintain a competitive edge in a fast-evolving EV landscape.

The upcoming meeting underscores a growing convergence between technology and mobility, where battery performance, semiconductor efficiency, and smart display integration are central to next-generation vehicle design. Despite the absence of formal agreements, we anticipate official statements from both Samsung and Mercedes-Benz after the discussions.
