In the Howrah district of West Bengal’s Domjur, Raft Cosmic EV, a subsidiary of a firm based in Kolkata, plans to invest INR 50 crore in the construction of a new electric scooter production factory. The plant will have the capacity to produce 12,000 two-wheelers a year. After paying INR 40 crore to acquire Raft Motors in Maharashtra, the Cosmic Birla Group—which had previously focused on manufacturing parts for electric two-wheelers—expanded into the entire electric scooter business in 2023.

“We are presently selling e-scooters from the Maharashtra plant acquired in 2023, but our new EV facility in Domjur is set to become operational by October,” said Aditya Vikram Birla, Chairman as well as Managing Director of the Cosmic Birla Group. He added, “The new plant will include two production lines with a combined annual capacity of 12,000 e-bikes.”

aking into account the output from the Maharashtra facility, the business aims to reach a total yearly manufacturing capacity of 18,000 e-scooters by the end of FY’25. Raft Motors had been producing electric vehicles for a number of years before to the acquisition, bringing in between INR 11 and 12 crore annually.
