OMC Power has launched a second-life electric vehicle (EV) battery initiative, repurposing retired EV batteries for energy storage solutions in homes and businesses. The systems will support UPS installations and hybrid rooftop solar projects, offering sustainable and cost-effective power backup options.
Under the plan, Honda Motor Co. Ltd, which acquired a minority stake in OMC Power in October 2025, will supply batteries retired after three years of vehicle use for the next seven years. The batteries will be integrated into energy storage systems at OMC Power’s Manesar facility.
According to co-founder and CEO Rohit Chandra, EV battery repurposing is an emerging sector in India and addresses concerns over battery life post-vehicle usage. Pilot projects have already been completed, including a solar rooftop installation with battery backup at a school in Hardoi.
The initiative complements OMC Power’s broader plan to invest ₹4,000 crore and build a 1 GWp renewable energy portfolio by 2030, with 600 MWp expected from rooftop solar, compared to its current 75 MWp capacity.
