The Chennai-based Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has placed an order with OHM Global Mobility for 500 12-meter ultra-low floor electric buses. The electric buses have a range of more than 200 kilometers on a single charge and can accommodate 37 passengers in comfortable seats, plus an extra 24 standing passengers.

According to the terms of the MTC-awarded deal, Switch Mobility, another Ashok Leyland company, would provide Switch EiV12 model buses to OHM, who will then run and maintain the buses for a duration of 12 years. One hundred of these buses will have air conditioning, but the other 400 will not.

“This new order demonstrates our commitment to creating incredibly effective and cutting-edge products, which will propel the nation’s public transportation system’s expansion. “Our SWITCH EiV12 buses are the perfect solution for contemporary cities because they combine state-of-the-art technology, dependability, and comfort,” stated Shenu Agarwal, MD and CEO of Ashok Leyland.

He stated that Switch now operates over 950 vehicles and has a solid order book of over 2000 vehicles. The sturdy 650V electric design and IP67-rated batteries of the SWITCH EiV12 guarantee its longevity and security.

The development of charging infrastructure at six strategic depots—Perumbur, Perumbakam, Poonamalle, Vyasapandi, Thondiapet, and KK Nagar—will guarantee effective operations. By minimizing downtime and facilitating reliable service delivery, these charging stations will guarantee that the buses can run effectively throughout the city.
