The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has announced the upcoming launch of eight new public EV charging stations, which is an important step in the city’s transition toward clean mobility. The initiative, part of the first-phase rollout, aims to make electric vehicle adoption more convenient and accessible for residents across key urban zones.

      Strategic Rollout Across Two Zones

Under this phase, the municipal body will operationalize four EV charging stations in Zone 1 and four in Zone 2, offering a combined total of 48 charging points. The design of this structured expansion aims to ensure equitable charging access in Navi Mumbai’s major residential, commercial, and transit-heavy areas.

      Public–Private Partnership Model

The charging stations are being developed under a public–private partnership (PPP) framework, with leading energy and infrastructure companies participating in the project. These partners will oversee installation, operation, and maintenance, while NMMC will earn a revenue share through a fixed charge of ₹4 per kWh consumed at the stations.

To support the initiative, the civic body has allocated ₹2 crore from the 15th Finance Commission’s fund for air quality improvement, reinforcing its commitment to cleaner urban environments.

Scientific Location Mapping for Maximum Impact

To determine optimal locations, NMMC conducted a comprehensive grid and cluster analysis, identifying ideal points near parking hubs, malls, office complexes, parks, transport terminals, and high-traffic community zones. The long-term blueprint includes up to 24 citywide grid clusters featuring 143 charging points, subject to land availability.

      Additional Revenue Opportunities

Apart from charging services, the PPP model enables operators to use station premises for advertising and branding, with NMMC receiving a share of the ad revenue. Select locations may also include small kiosks or vending counters, subject to civic and regulatory permissions, creating a multi-purpose community utility space.

Strengthening EV Adoption & Sustainability Goals

This expansion supports India’s broader national mission to achieve 30% EV penetration by 2030. NMMC aims to build a robust, reliable, and accessible charging ecosystem that encourages more residents to opt for electric mobility.

According to municipal leadership, these charging stations will reduce emissions, improve air quality, and boost sustainable energy use—positioning Navi Mumbai as a forward-looking, environmentally conscious urban center.

      Next Steps & Future Plans

The eight charging stations will become operational in the coming months, forming the backbone of a much larger network planned for the city. Usage data from Phase 1 will guide future expansion across additional zones and public spaces.

We expect the initiative to accelerate EV adoption, support eco-friendly commuting, and enhance the everyday convenience of electric vehicle owners across Navi Mumbai.
