Chinese electric vehicle maker NIO has set a new global record by completing 146,649 battery swaps within 24 hours, marking the highest single-day total ever recorded in the EV industry.
The milestone was achieved during China’s peak Spring Festival travel rush, one of the busiest annual travel periods in the country. The surge in long-distance travel significantly increased demand for fast and convenient EV energy solutions.
NIO’s achievement was made possible through its extensive nationwide network of automated battery swap stations. The company’s swap technology allows drivers to replace a depleted battery with a fully charged one in just a few minutes, offering a quicker alternative to conventional fast charging.
The record comes shortly after NIO surpassed 100 million cumulative battery swaps, underscoring the rapid expansion and adoption of its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model. Under this system, customers can purchase vehicles without owning the battery, reducing upfront costs while enabling flexible battery upgrades and quick swaps.
Industry analysts note that the record highlights the scalability of battery-swapping infrastructure in high-density EV markets such as China. While the model remains less common globally, China’s growing EV adoption and infrastructure investment have positioned the country as a leader in alternative charging technologies.
With expanding infrastructure and rising EV penetration, NIO’s latest milestone reinforces the potential of battery swapping as a viable complement to traditional charging networks.
