Twelve new electric vehicle fast-charging stations have been inaugurated at the Biden Welcome Center along Interstate 95 near Newark, expanding charging access for both local EV drivers and interstate travelers.
Each charging unit is equipped with two ports, offering both CCS1 and NACS connectors, allowing two vehicles to charge simultaneously without the need for adapters. The dual-port chargers can deliver a combined power output of up to 400 kW, with each vehicle receiving a minimum of 150 kW. The stations are capable of charging an electric vehicle from 10% to 80% in under 20 minutes and support multiple accessible payment options, with no membership required.
The charging infrastructure was installed and will be operated by Applegreen Electric, which also manages the Biden Welcome Center. Applegreen will provide on-site support around the clock to assist customers with any charging-related issues.
The project was funded with $735,000 in federal support from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program, established under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Delaware is also preparing to apply for additional funding under the second round of the NEVI Program. The upcoming phase will focus on expanding fast-charging infrastructure along major travel corridors, increasing public charging access in areas with a high concentration of multifamily housing, and serving communities where residents may lack access to private overnight charging.
