The “safest and most secure” Plug & Charge technology has been introduced in Europe for the first time, according to European EV charging company Allego.
The new technology claims to make EV charging as simple as plugging in your car. It is based on the open industry standard OCPP 2.0.1. Forget complex sign-ins, cards, and applications. Simply pull up and plug in your EV if it is compatible.
“We give drivers the confidence to travel further and charge more conveniently by removing digital friction points, apps, and cards,” stated Jean Gadrat, CMO at Allego. Plug & Charge offers the same safe, one-step charging experience whether you’re in the city, on the highway, or overseas.
This is how Plug & Charge from Allego operates.
Developed by Allego on OCPP 2.0.1, Plug & Charge is an authentication and payment system based on ISO 15118 that standardises communication between networks and chargers that comply with OCPP.
The process is entirely hands-off once Plug & Charge is activated for your vehicle. When you plug in, the charger and your EV exchange secure digital certificates to verify your identity. You don’t have to touch a button, access an app, or even tap an RFID card.
Only authorised vehicles are able to charge thanks to Allego’s system’s support for mutual TLS encryption and certificate-based authentication. This eliminates the possibility of billing errors and unauthorised access, which have been major issues with some older public charging systems.
Accessible throughout Europe Now
More than 5,000 fast and ultra-fast chargers in Europe offer Allego’s Plug & Charge feature, which also operates across partner networks to provide a really cross-network Plug & Charge experience.
The platform is also prepared for the future. The protocol enables advanced security, remote firmware updates, and additional functionality as they become available because of OCPP 2.0.1 in order for your charger to expand with your EV.
“OCPP 2.0.1 guarantees that your car always ‘speaks the same language‘ as the charger, even as new vehicle models and charging technologies emerge,” stated Manuel Trotta, head of mobility solutions at Allego.
