MG, the electric vehicle brand under SAIC Motor, has officially started deliveries of the MG4 Anxin Edition in China, marking the world’s first mass-produced EV equipped with a semi-solid-state battery. This milestone signals a major advancement in commercial EV battery technology, bridging the gap between traditional lithium-ion and future solid-state batteries.

The semi-solid-state battery promises enhanced safety, thermal stability, and performance, while remaining cost-effective for mass-market adoption.

      Advanced Semi-Solid-State Battery Details

The MG4 Anxin Edition is powered by a 53.95 kWh manganese-based semi-solid-state battery co-developed with QingTao Energy. Key advantages of this battery technology include:

      • Reduced liquid electrolyte, improving thermal stability and structural integrity.

      • Enhanced safety and reliability compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries.

      • Improved cold-weather performance and rigorous compliance with national safety standards.

      Performance and Charging Capabilities

The new MG4 model offers competitive performance for mainstream EV buyers:

      • CLTC-rated driving range of up to 537 km per charge.

      • 140 kW DC fast-charging, delivering approximately 400 km of range in just 12 minutes.

      • Intelligent battery management systems to maintain high efficiency and longevity.

      Market Positioning and Pricing

The MG4 Semi-Solid-State Anxin Edition targets the mainstream family EV segment, with a launch price of RMB 102,800 (~$14,400), and limited-time subsidies bringing the price closer to RMB 99,800 (~$14,000) in China.

It combines next-generation battery technology with modern EV features, including driver-assist systems, smart connectivity, and thermal management, offering a practical and safe solution for everyday use.

      Significance for the EV Industry

Deliveries of the MG4 Anxin Edition mark a pivotal moment in battery innovation, demonstrating that semi-solid-state chemistry can be implemented at scale. This technology offers a safer, higher-performing alternative to traditional lithium-ion batteries without the high costs associated with full solid-state cells.

Industry analysts view this as a game-changing step for EV adoption, indicating that advanced battery technologies are moving from concept to mainstream production.

      Outlook

With mass production now underway in China, the MG4 Anxin Edition sets a new benchmark for EV battery technology, paving the way for broader adoption of semi-solid-state batteries in other vehicle segments and international markets.
