MG Motor India, a joint venture of China’s SAIC Motor and India’s JSW Group, is to launch a new electric car in India to take on Tata’s upcoming Curvv EV.

The EV will be launched close to the festive season in India. As per the report, it will be priced between the Coment and ZS EV – under Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom).

The new MG EV will be a CUV – Crossover Utility Vehicle which is essentially a utility vehicle with a unibody construction, unlike the body-on-frame construction typical of traditional SUVs.

The new MG EV is expected to come with a 50.3 kWh battery pack like its older sibling, ZS EV. However, due to the lighter weight of the upcoming model, it may offer an enhanced range compared to the claimed 461 km range of the ZS.

Besides, the upcoming MG electric car is expected to get the same front axle-mounted motor capable of producing 176 hp and 280 Nm.

Times of India claimed to have exclusive footage of what the company calls an ‘Intelligent CUV’. The car has tall stance with a coupe-like roof, and large wheels, the report added. However, being heavily camofalged, other features were not visible, claimed the report.

MG Motors currentlly sells two electric cars – the MG ZS EV and the Comet EV. MG has been wittnessing significant growth in its EV sales, with electric vehicles constituting around 35 percent of the company’s total sales. The ZS EV alone recorded over 500 units sold in the past three months and saw a remarkable 95 percent sales increase from Q1 to Q2 in 2024. Overall, MG’s EV sales rose by 39 percent during this period.

With the upcoming electric CUV, MG aims to strengthen its position in the expanding EV market in India, which is currently dominated by Tata Motors. The new model is expected to bolster MG’s electric vehicle trident, further driving success in the domestic market.
