Mercedes-Benz has officially started production of electric drive units (EDUs) for its all-new electric GLC SUV at the Star Assembly plant in Sebeș, Romania. This marks a significant milestone in Mercedes-Benz’s global electrification strategy, supporting the company’s target to launch 15 new or updated electric vehicles by the end of 2027.

      Strategic Expansion and Investment

The newly established production facility spans over 30,000 square meters, integrating both assembly and logistics operations for electric drive unit manufacturing. The project has received state support from the Romanian government, highlighting the strategic importance of Sebeș in Mercedes-Benz’s global production network. The facility demonstrates the company’s commitment to high-tech manufacturing and local workforce development.

      Advanced Manufacturing Capabilities

The assembly line at Sebeș covers approximately 1,000 metres in length and incorporates over 200 manual and automated processes. Employees reassigned from other areas of the plant underwent extensive training and upskilling programmes to ensure high-quality production standards.

The plant is fully integrated into Mercedes-Benz’s MO360 digital production ecosystem, ensuring complete traceability of components and production data. Sustainability is central, with operations powered by renewable electricity and a heat pump system supplying the production hall. A photovoltaic system of up to 5 MW is also under consideration to further enhance environmental performance.

Global Production Network and Supply Plans

The electric drive units produced in Sebeș will supply Mercedes-Benz’s Bremen plant in Germany, where the all-electric GLC is scheduled for series production in the first quarter of 2026. Additionally, starting next year, Sebeș will supply the Kecskemét plant in Hungary with EDUs for the new electric C-Class.

The electric GLC is built on the MB.EA platform, supporting ultra-rapid charging up to 330 kW, offering enhanced convenience and efficiency for EV owners. The vehicle is set to combine performance, sustainability, and advanced technology to meet growing European demand for premium electric SUVs.

      Commitment to Sustainability

Mercedes-Benz’s Sebeș facility aligns with the company’s sustainability goals, operating in a net carbon-neutral manner. The use of renewable energy sources and advanced production technologies reinforces the company’s position as a global leader in sustainable mobility.

      Conclusion

The launch of electric drive production for the GLC at Sebeș strengthens Mercedes-Benz’s EV production capabilities in Europe. With advanced manufacturing, renewable energy integration, and a digitalised production ecosystem, the Sebeș plant sets a benchmark for premium electric vehicle production. The initiative also underscores Mercedes-Benz’s strategy to accelerate electrification across its model lineup, enhancing its competitive edge in the global EV market.
